EMS Canada Info

I appreciate the privilege of being able to serve the EMS community in Canada for the next few years taking over from Allan Effa. We have all benefitted from Allan’s hard work in initiating and building up the Canadian chapter of EMS over the past years and I am sure you will join me in expressing our appreciation for his efforts. I am particularly grateful to Allan for his willingness to help me transition into my responsibilities – I have much to learn! Tim Stabell is continuing in the role of treasurer, which is also appreciated.

An introduction:

I serve with the mission agency Fellowship International, as well as with Northwest Baptist Seminary (part of ACTS seminary on the campus of Trinity Western University, Langley BC) as Coordinator of International Leadership Development. My role includes oversight of the professional development of our missionary personnel, as well as coaching churches in the area of missions, evangelism and intercultural relationships. My wife, Karen, and I worked in Pakistan for 14 years and I am still involved in Bible translation among the Sindhi people.  You can contact me through the Northwest website.

Annual Meeting:

Mark your calendars for the 2012 annual regional meeting:

Thurs evening and Friday morning, Feb 23 & 24
Edmonton, AB

The theme is “Mission Methods” in commemoration of the 100th year anniversary of the publication of Roland Allen’s influential book Missionary Methods: St Paul’s or Ours. There will be a call for papers reflecting this theme. Thursday evening will include a roundtable discussion about the ways that academics (missiologists) and practitioners (missions pastors, cross-cultural workers) can better coordinate their efforts and interaction.

I welcome any and all suggestions to make our time together impacting and worthwhile. I understand the purpose and value of our gathering is to

  • facilitate the interaction of missiological thinking in Canada
  • encourage the interchange of ideas between academics and practitioners
  • provide a forum in which students of missiology can present their research
  • bring glory to God through the consideration of strategic, ethical, biblical and fruitful missions practices.

Publications:

I found the recent RESET conference: Missions in the context of Deep Change (Scottsdale, AZ Sept. 29 - Oct 1) to be stimulating and worthwhile considering the transitions we are navigating in the organizations I work for. EMS workshops on Urbanization: Mission in the Context of the City were educational and enjoyable. The annual collection of EMS papers entitled Reflecting God’s Glory Together: Diversity in Evangelical Mission (edited by A. Scott Moreau and Beth Snodderly) was released during the convention. EMS members should receive their copy in the mail.

Reg Reimer has become an important voice for persecuted Christians in Vietnam through his book, Vietnam's Christians: A Century of Growth in Adversity. Reg has been a lifelong missionary to Vietnam and is an authority on the Christian movement in that country.  It can be ordered through William Carey Library. Copies will also be available at the 2012 EMS Canada meeting.

Dan Sheffield's article “Herbert E Randall: A Canadian Holiness Missionary in Egypt and his Quest for More of the Holy Spirit” has been published in the Canadian Journal of Pentecostal-Charismatic Christianity, a journal connected to Trinity Western University.

Let me know if you have published recently and we will post the information on this page.

EMS Canada exists to bring together academics, administrators and practitioners around the concern for missions. In particular it looks to help forge a missiology that addresses the challenge of participating in God’s mission in Canada.  Here are some of the reasons you should consider becoming a member of EMS Canada:

  • Your membership supports the network of missiological scholars, researchers and practitioners across Canada and provides a venue for sharing research and information
  • Your membership helps fund our regional annual meeting in Canada
  • Your membership entitles you to a copy of the annual EMS publication of essays (the 2008 collection of essays resulted in a 407 page book entitled Missions from the Majority World)
  • Your membership entitles you to receive the Occasional Bulletin published by the EMS President.
  • Your membership includes a reduced fee for the EMS annual meeting (currently $100 less)
  • Your membership assures you are included in the Directory of EMS members
  • Your membership may be a valuable addition to your resume
  • Your membership is tax deductible (professional society membership)

Pay membership fees directly to our Canadian Treasurer
